My Favorite Movies Filmed in Chicago
Chicago is known for many things including great food, great architecture, and the movies. Over the years, Chicago has been the backdrop to many feature films and television series. With a skyline of skyscrapers, the beauty of the lake, and diverse neighborhoods, Chicago can be converted into any film set. Over the years Chicago has hosted; Bruce Willis in the movie “Simon;”, Julia Roberts filming “My Best Firends Wedding” and Sandra Bulluck “While You Were Sleeping.” Recently Angelina Jolie has been in town filming a new action film. While Johnny Depp is in town filimg Dillinger.
With all this movie activity in mind, I thought I would revisit my favorite five movies filmed in Chicago. While each is not necessarily a classic, they all have great shots of Chicago and our region. All of the movies are available on DVD so you can rent them today. 1. “About Last Night” - (Rated R) Starring Demi Moore, Rob Lowe, Jim Belushi, & Elizabeth Perkins. This love story includes great scenes of Grant Park, Wrigleyville, and Division Street. The movie depicts young professionals living it up in the city, spending time on softball fields and in bars. In my opinion this love story is a classic and contains some of the best scenes of Chicago in any movie. 2. “Blues Brothers” - (Rated R) Starring John Belushi and Dan Ackroid. This classic provides some of the most memorable destruction of city property ever. In one scene, the Blues Brothers, who are on a mission from God, drive their car through Daley Plaza next to the Picasso and eventually through the window and lobby of the Daley Building. Throughout the movie scenes of downtown and surrounding neighborhoods are featured. This comedy has remained a classic over the years and is another must see. 3. “The Fugitive” - (Rated PG-13) Starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. This action suspense thriller is a remake of the 1960’s television series. Chicago was featured throughout the film with scenes including the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Michigan Avenue offices, Cook County Hospital and a climatic conclusion at the Chicago Hilton and Towers Hotel. With lots of non-stop nail-biting action and suspense, you will be riveted to your seat. Even if this movie had been filmed in Peoria, it would be a must see. 4. “Backdraft” - (Rated R) Starring Kurt Russell, Billy Baldwin, & Robert DeNiro. This Ron Howard directed film is a disaster movie with a plot. Firefighters in the city fight fires set by an arsonist. Scenes include neighborhood fires along with fires in the Loop. A great scene is set on the Chicago River and the Michigan Ave. bridge. The characters are on a boat and they watch a fire engine race along Wacker Drive to a fire. The scenes of Chicago are filmed magnificently and the movie rates well. Tie 5. “Running Scared” - (Rated R) Starring Billy Crystal & Gregory Hines. This comedy police story features a terrific scene on the EL tracks from O’Hare to Downtown. There is also some great damage and destruction of the State of Illinois Building ) Now the Thompson Center. Tie 5. “Ferris Buller’s Day Off” - (Rated PG) Starring Matthew Broderick. This teenage story shows how a student on hiatus from school can cause mischief in the city. From the suburbs to the Loop, John Hughes, a Chicago born director, shows off the city masterfully. A highlight includes Matthew singing during a city parade. Tie 5. “Mad Dog and Glory” (Rated R) Starring Bill Murry and Robert DeNiro. This relativly unknown movie contains some great scenes of Chicago and Uma Thurman.
